Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte on Friday spoke by phone to the prime minister of Libya's internationally recognised government, Fayez al-Serraj as the three-week long battle for Tripoli continues to rage, Adnkronos learned from sources.

At least 278 people have been killed and 1,332 injured in this month's military escalation in Tripoli while over 30,000 people have fled their homes, according to the United Nations.

The deadly clashes pit forces allied with the UN-backed government against the self-styled Libyan National Army of eastern warloard Khalifa Haftar, who launched an offensive to seize control of Tripoli on 5 April.

Libya has been in chaos since the Nato-backed ouster of late dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Rival administrations in the east and west backed by a myriad of militias are vying for control of the oil-rich country, which was an Italian colony from 1911-1947.
