Italian NGO vessel, dozens of rescued migrants 'to dock in Lampedusa'

An Italian charity rescue ship was due to dock in Lampedusa on Friday with 30 rescued migrants on board, and was being escorted to the tiny southern island's port by two finance police vessels, Adnkronos has learned.

It was not immediately clear when the 30 migrants would come ashore when the Mare Jonio vessel operated by NGO Mediterranea docks, although Lampedusa's mayor Salvatore Martello said they would be allowed off the ship immediately.

The Mare Jonio picked up the migrants, who include five minors and a pregnant woman, in international waters some 40 nautical miles off the Libyan coast on Thursday.

Italy's hardline interior minister Matteo Salvini closed the country's ports to rescue vessels in June 2018, sparking several international standoffs involving hundreds of migrants who were stranded at sea for days until other states agreed to take a share.
