Rescued migrants denied safe port says German NGO

Fifty-three rescued migrants including five minor and two infants are stranded in the Mediterranean on the SeaWatch3, which has not been given a safe port to land the migrants at, German charity SeaWatch tweeted on Friday.

Seawatch3 is currently close to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, Seawatch tweeted.

"Can an Italian minister really want to force us to take these people back to a country at war?" read the tweet, referring to Libya, where Italy's hardline interior minister Matteo Salvini has said the migrants must go.

"Can the European Union really allow such a violation of human rights?" the tweet added.

Sixty German cities have said they are willing to welcome the 53 rescued migrants, according to Seawatch.

Seawatch said it saved the migrants from a rubber dinghy in international waters 47 nautical miles from the Libyan coast on Thursday, while Salvini alleges the migrants were picked up in Libyan waters and must disembark at the port of Tripoli.

If Seawatch3 enters Italian territory without permission, its captain and owner face fines of up to 50,000 euros under a new directive issued by Salvini this week.
