The remains of two Italians who died when an Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa in March have returned to Italy from Ethiopia following "complex" victim identifications, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Two teams of experts from the Italian police travelled to the Ethiopian capital in recent months and helped with the repatriation operations, which were coordinated by the foreign ministry and the Italian embassy in Addis Ababa, the statement said.

The foreign ministry "has been in constant contact with the families of the victims" and has been assisting them since the day of the disaster on 10 March, said the statement.

All eight crew members and 149 passengers died after the Nairobi-bound Ethiopian airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane crashed in a field six minutes after takeoff. Eight Italians were among the crash victims, whose bodies had to be identified by DNA tests.
