'Hero' captain of coronavirus-hit Diamond Princess returns to Italy

Foreign minister Luigi Di Maio on Monday welcomed back to Italy Gennaro Arma, captain of the coronavirus-hit cruise ship Diamond Princess, and praised him and his crew for "weathering the storm".

Greeting Arma, Di Maio told him he would find Italy "a little different" under its nationwide lockdown aimed at fighting the country's dramatic coronavirus epidemic - now the worst in the world.

"It is at such times that we Italians know how to do our best and can follow your example. You knew how to keep a cool head aboard that ship and weathered the storm," Di Maio said.

Arma and members of the Diamond Princess's crew were allowed to return home on Monday after they were held in quarantine for two weeks in the Japanese port of Yokohama after disembarking.

A total 712 Diamond Princess passengers and crew were infected with coronavirus and seven died. The ship was quarantined in Yokohama on 4 February with over 3,700 on board after 10 passengers became ill.
