Publishing is crucial to Italy's cultural life and will play a key role in the country's recovery from its devastating Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak, deputy foreign minister Marina Sereni said on Thursday - World Book and Copyright Day.

"Publishing is a cornerstone of our cultural industry both in economic terms and in terms of Italy's international image," Sereni said in a message to the Sanctis Foundation during a live-streaming literary marathon on the education ministry's website.

"Looking to the future necessarily means also reflecting on the present and the heavy impact of the current health emergency, which has not spared the publishing sector....culture will be one of the essential cornerstones for the recovery of Italy in the coming months".

The foreign ministry has developed a programme to support and "relaunch" Italy abroad whose scope includes the "creative" industries, among them publishing, Sereni said.

Bookshops have recently reopened in Italy - the first non-essential sector to be allowed to do so since the economy was shuttered in March and a reflection of the publishing sector's importance to the country.

"Through the diplomatic-consular network and Italian cultural institutes, the foreign ministry is strongly committed to supporting Italian books and authors abroad," Sereni stated.

Italy awards annual translation prizes to this end and the foreign and culture ministries and the Italian Trade Agency (ICE) take part in the main international fairs in the sector, the statement noted.
