Di Maio, Pompeo talks focus on Libya, Covid-19

Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and US secretary of state Mike Pompeo held talks late Thursday that centred on war-torn Libya and the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, the foreign ministry said in a tweet.

"Minister Luigi Di Maio today had a phone conversation with US secretary of state (Mike) Pompeo. The situation in Libya and the Covid-19 emergency were at the centre of the talks," read the tweet.

Referring to Italy's dramatic coronavirus outbreak - one of the world's worst - Pompeo tweeted admiration for "the resilience of the Italian people in the face of this crisis".

"Close coordination and cooperation with our NATO Ally Italy is key as we work to reopen our societies and restart the global economy," Pompeo added.
