Following the deadly jihadist attacks in Nice and Vienna in recent days, Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio called on Tuesday for a Europe-wide US-style anti-terror measure like the Patriot Act passed after Al-Qaeda's 9/11 attacks on America.
"It is a matter of starting to think of something bigger and that concerns the whole EU: a Patriot Act on the American model," Di Maio wrote on Facebook.
"Because today we are all children of the same European people. And the security of one state means the security of all the others."
Both Italy and the EU "must raise their security levels," Di Maio wrote.
"We must also tighten controls in mosques, with the cooperation of local Muslim communities and the moderate Islam that has always condemned these (terrorist) acts," Di Maio added.
"We remain united in our opposition to every form of terrorism and fanaticism," the post ended.
