Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano was on Monday due to attend a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini was slated to open the summit, at which ministers were due to discuss the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) with Iran, said the ministry
During a working lunch, Alfano and his colleagues were set to discuss Turkey and its bid to join the 28-member bloc, the Italian foreign ministry stated.
The afternoon session of the summit was due to focus on North Korea's nuclear programme "a subject on which the ministers will be invited to reflect on possible sanctions in light of Pyongyang's repeated provocations", the ministry said.
EU special representative Stavros Lambrinidis was later due to chair a summit session on human rights, according to the ministry.
Alfano was scheduled to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit with counterparts from Lithuanisa (Linas Linkevicius), Sweden ( Margot Wallstroem) Germany (Sigmar Gabriel) and Ireland (Simon Coveney) said the ministry.
