Alfano in Brussels for foreign ministers summit

Crisis-hit Venezuela and the Middle East peace process were the main focus of a European Union foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday attended by Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano and counterparts from the 28-member bloc.

Also on the summit agenda was the outcome of a conference on the Sahel region at which 50 countries including Italy, the United States, Japan and Norway pledged 509 million dollars on Friday for the G5 Sahel force in the region made up of troops from Mali, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.

Alfano was also due to attend a meeting on the sidelines of the summit with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Morocco and the Palestinian Authority, as well as the Arab League's secretary-general.

A bilateral meeting between Alfano and Slovakia's foreign minister Ivan Korcok has also been scheduled during Monday's summit, according to the Italian foreign ministry.
