Alfano in high-level Libya meetings at UN in New York

Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano was on Thursday due to meet the United Nations' special envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame during a two-day visit to New York and to chair a session of the UN Security Council on the turmoil-wracked country, the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement.

After his meeting with Salame, Alfano was slated to meet Libya's foreign minister Mohammed Taher Siyala and to hold a joint press conference with Salame, who was due to brief the UN Security Council session on Libya, the ministry said.

Later on Thursday, Alfano was scheduled to hold talks with the United States' permanent representative to the UN, Nikki Haley, and with UN General Assembly president Miroslav Lajcak, according to the ministry.

On Friday, Alfano will chair a session of the Security Council during which UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres will give a briefing on security in the Mediterranean, said the ministry.

Alfano was due to have a meeting with Guterres later on Friday, the ministry said.

Italy is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council and this month holds its rotating presidency.
