Jailed Naples mafia boss Michele Zagaria's sister was among four people arrested in southern Italy on Thursday on suspicion of mafia association, abetment and receiving stolen goods among other charges.

Gesualda Zagaria and the nephew of Camorra boss Francesco Nobis were arrested by anti-mafia police from Caserta in the Campania region on the orders of Naples anti-mafia prosecutors.

Gesualda and Nobis' nephew Filippo Capalbo are accused of building the secret bunker in Casapesenna, 20 kilometres northwest of Naples, where Zagaria hid out during his 16 years on the run.

Local architect Antonio Nocera was also arrested in Thursday's raid on suspicion of fraudulently registering assets, police said.

The Zagaria clan is a faction of the Camorra's bloodthirsty Casalesi crime federation, whose power base is Casal di Principe in the province of Caserta.

Zagaria led the clan until his arrest at the bunker in Casapesenna on 7 December 2011. He was handed a life sentence in absentia in a major trial in 2008 that jailed four Casalesi 'godfathers'.

The Casalesi clan is heavily involved in the cement and milk industries as well as the international drug trade. It is thought to have murdered over 1,000 people in the past 30 years to establish an iron grip on the area between Naples and the coastal city of Salerno.

The clan supplies drugs to the Sicilian mafia in Palermo and is allied with Albanian Nigerian crime syndicates. Its total assets are estimated to be worth around 30 billion euros.
