At least seven killed in southern Italian firework factory blast

At least seven people died and four were wounded on Friday in an explosion at a fireworks factory near Bari in Italy's southern Puglia region.

Six of the victims of the blast at the plant at Modugno were killed instantly while the seventh died in hospital.

Operations to retrieve the bodies from rubble were hampered by a series of subsequent explosions inside the factory.

The cause of the blast was not immediately known, but it was the latest in a string of explosions at firework factories in Italy, mostly in its south.

After Friday's disaster, the major trade union federation CGIL repeated previous calls to Italy's rulers for more stringent safety norms to protect workers.

"People can't keep being killed at work. We are deeply indignant about the latest tragedy in Modugno and once again ask the government and Parliament to strengthen safety norms and step up controls," CGIL stated.

As recently as in May, four people died and several were injured in a powerful explosion at at family-owned firework factory near the southern city of Naples. A fire broke out after the blast, which investigators believe may have been caused by human error.
