Attack on Italian soldiers shows Afghanistan still unstable says Senate speaker

Wednesday's attack on an armoured Italian military vehicle in western Afghanistan shows that the presence of Italian soldiers is vital in the volatile country, Senate speaker Elisabetta Alberti Casellati said in a statement.

"Today's attack against our soldiers some 20 kilometres from Herat as while on a training mission shows how Afghanistan is still a flashpoint and is far from stable," the statement said.

"It also shows yet again the precious contribution made by our peacekeepers, who do their job with great professionalism and humanity - they are an honour to our country," the statement added.

"My thoughts are with them - Italy is grateful," concluded the statement.

Italian defence staff sources said earlier that no Italian military personnel were injured in the rocket attack believed to have been launched by a rogue Afghan border guard.

NATO's Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan confirmed the incident and said no coalition member had been injured.

Taliban insurgents routinely urge members of Afghan security forces to attack NATO personnel serving in Afghanistan, most of whom are advisers.
