Russia's three-month-old invasion of Ukraine, bilateral cooperation, especially in the energy sector, and war-ravaged Libya were at the centre of talks in Rome on Wednesday between Italy's foreign ministry secretary-general Ettore Francesco Sequi and Algerian counterpart Chakib Rachid Kaid.
The meeting focussed on the organisation of the upcoming Italy-Algeria Summit in Algiers on 18-19 July, according to a foreign ministry statement. "Important bilateral agreements" are expected to be signed at the summit, which will be chaired by Italian premier Mario Draghi and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the statement noted.
Italian and Algerian companies attend a business forum due to take place on the sidelines of the summit, said the statement.
Sequi and Kaid "also exchanged views on bilateral cooperation issues, in particular energy security, the situation in Libya, the Maghreb and the Sahel, and the war in Ukraine," the statement concluded.
