Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Hong Kong's bishop, Cardinal John Tong, the Vatican said in a statement on Tuesday.
Tong, 78, is succeeded by Monsignor Michael Yeung Ming-Cheung, who was previously auxiliary bishop of the diocese, the Vatican added.
After his election as cardinal in 2012, Tong said he would work to build dialogue between the Vatican and mainland China, whose authorities only recognise the Communist-controlled Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association Church.
