Carabinieri train African police units

Italian Carabinieri are training police in Rwanda and Burundi as part of a cooperation programme between the Italian Embassy in Kampala, the Police Corps of both countries and the General Command of the Carabinieri, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The training programme focuses on forensic activities and on the management of public order in compliance with international standards, according to the statement. The programme is being run by two teams each containing three public order trainers and one operational expert, the statement noted.

For three weeks the Carabinieri officers will train 52 Rwandan police units and 100 Ugandan policemen on the management of public order, said the statement.

The training will cover rules of conduct, international standards on the correct use of vehicles and equipment and respect for human rights in the use of force, according to the statement.

Carabinieri trainers are also running a course for forensic police and evidence gathering in Uganda under an agreement help Ugandan Police set up a Regional Forensic Police Centre in Kampala, the statement said.
