Coalition air strikes against IS plummet

The number of air raids by the US-led coalition against the Islamic State jihadist group in Iraq and Syria has dropped significantly, coalition spokesman Ryan Dillon tweeted on Tuesday.

"Single strike (four weapons) by @CJTFOIR on 8 Nov. marked fewest strikes/munitions dropped in the 3-year campaign to #defeatDaesh in Iraq and Syria," read the tweet, referring to the Arabic acronym for IS.

"Nearly all territory once controlled by IS retaken; 7.5 million people no longer under Daesh control," the tweet added.

At the peak of the air campaign against IS, the daily count of air strikes could top 50 but the three-year war against the extremists is now winding down, with just a few hundred fighters believed to be holding out mainly in the remote desert area on the Iraq-Syria border.

CJTFOIR is the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve announced by US Central Command in December 2014.
