Italy remains focused on stabilising war-ravaged Libya though a negotiated, inclusive political settlement that goes beyond "the logic of military warfare and external meddling," premier Giuseppe Conte said on Wednesday.
"The Libyan crisis is always a central concern and a foreign policy focus," Conte told reporters at the traditional year-end press conference.
"We have never let our attention stray from the topic and from the objective of stabilising the country, overcoming the logic of military warfare and external meddling," Conte added.
The peace process "remains fragile" but the government will keep striving for a united, independent Libya "free from foreign interference," Conte stated.
"We will work within the framework of the European Union and the Atlantic Alliance...military offensives don't resolve problems - there is always room for dialogue."
Libya was an Italian colony from 1911-1943 and Italy has major business interests in the oil-rich country. Libya is also one of the main launch-pads for Mediterranean migrant crossings to Italy.
