Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte on Wednesday tweeted his appreciation of European Council president Donald Tusk after they had talks in Brussels, calling him "a wonderful friend".
"I will miss you as a President but I will keep you as a wonderful friend. Thank you Donald and keep working for a better Europe," read the tweet.
Tusk returned Conte's compliment on Twitter.
"Great to see my good friend PM Giuseppe Conte again. We discussed Italy’s priorities ahead of the next European Council meeting in October," read Tusk's tweet.
Tusk, a former Polish prime minister, stands down as European Council president in November when he will be replaced by Belgium's premier Charles Michel at the helm of Europe's top decision-making body.
Conte was due to meet Michel on Wednesday after holding talks with Tusk, with European Commission president Jean-Claud Juncker, president-elect Ursula von der Leyen, and European Parliament president David Sassoli.
