Conte to Austria and Greece - don't single out Italians

Italians should be allowed to visit Austria and Greece without "unjustifiable" restrictions, premier Giuseppe Conte said Wednesday after Austria refused to reopen its border with Italy and Greece unveiled quarantine plans for visitors from four coronavirus-hit northern regions.

"There is no reason for Austria and Greece or anyone else to impose restrictive measures on Italy," Conte told reporters in Rome.

"For this reason (foreign minister Luigi) Di Maio, (European affairs minister Vincenzo) Amendola, (culture minister Dario) Francheschini and (health minister Roberto) Speranza are doing their utmost to stop discriminatory decisions that we consider completely unacceptable," Conte said.

Athens announced last week that air travellers from Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont and Veneto the coronavirus's four hardest hit Italian regions will have to be tested and go into quarantine for a week if negative and two weeks if positive when they arrive in Greece, which will re-open its borders to visitors from 29 countries on 15 June.

The northern Italian regions account for most of Italy's coronavirus deaths.

Austria will not yet reopen its border with Italy for epidemiological reasons, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said Wednesday.
