Conte to meet Tunisian premier Mechichi in Rome

Italy's prime minister Giuseppe Conte will on Tuesday hold talks in Rome with his Tunisian counterpart Hichem Mechichi, Conte's office said in a statement which gave no details on an agenda.

Over 11,000 migrants from Tunisia have entered Italy this year and foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said in November the number of Tunisian migrants being sent back was still too low despite a repatriation accord.

Italy is reportedly prepared to offer Tunisia millions of euros to help it strengthen its border control but the country's president Kais Saied has said he also wants to see more European aid to combat the poverty and joblessness that fuels migration.

Di Maio and interior minister Luciana Lamorgese held talks in Tunisia in mid-August with Saied, Mechichi and the EU's home affairs and neighbourhood and enlargement commissioners.

La Morgese said the 17 August talks were aimed at stemming the influx of migrants from Tunisia and to boost Europe-wide solidarity with the young democracy, which is struggling economically with unemployment at over 20%.
