The death toll in a train collision on Friday in the northern Egyptian port city of Alexandria on Friday rose to 36, with at least 109 injured, state-run daily Al-Ahram said on its website, quoting a health ministry spokesman.
Egypt's prosecutor-general, Nabil Sadiq, has ordered an urgent investigation into the accident, which happened when a train travelling from Cairo crashed into one coming from Port Said, Al-Ahram said.
Egyptian premier Sherif Ismail ordered craines to be dispatched to lift the two trains from the site of the accident, Al-Ahram eported.
The dead were transferred to Koum El-Dekka morgue and injured passengers were taken to several hospitals in Alexandria, the daily quoted health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed as saying.
Friday's collision was the second serious train crash in Egypt in recent years. A train derailment in Giza outside Cairo killed at least 19 people in 2013, Al-Ahram said.
