Di Maio attends Global Coalition meeting in Morocco

Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio is in Marrakesh for meeting of the 84-member Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh/ISIS, which is being co-chaired by Morocco and the US.

At the Marrakesh meeting, Di Maio was due to address panel discussions focussed on Iraq and Syria, key countries for the Coalition's activities, and to reaffirm Italy's commitment in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan and in Africa, , the foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Italy is one of the main contributors to the support and training activities of the military and police forces in Iraq, both through its presence on the ground and through funds intended for the stabilization of the areas liberated from ISIS, said the statement.

Italy also finances projects in the north-east of Syria in the agricultural, health and education, for demining and to strengthen local governance, most recently with a one million euro contribution to UNICEF for a programme to re-integrate Syrian minors in their communities of origin, who are currently living in camps of the north-east.

Di Maio was also slate to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the meeting, according to the statement.

Created in September 2014, the Coalition is committed to degrading and ensuring ISIS’s enduring defeat. Its multi-dimensional approach involves dismantling the terror group's networks, its financing and 'economic infrastructure'; preventing the flow of foreign fighters across borders; supporting stabilisation and the restoration of essential public services to liberated areas; and countering the group’s propaganda
