Foreign minister Luigi Di Maio held "positive" talks with the United Nations secretary-general's special advisor to war-ravaged Libya, Stephanie Williams, the foreign ministry tweeted on Monday.
"Positive meeting between FM @luigidimaio and @SASGonLibya, Stephanie Williams," read the tweet.
"Italy reaffirmed its support to UN mediation and the importance of international consensus on Libya's electoral path and strengthening of @UNSMILibya," the tweet went on.
Williams last week urged Libya’s politicians to stop seeking to stay in power and focus instead on preparing for postponed national elections to be held by June.
Libyan presidential and parliamentary polls slated for 24 December were cancelled, partly due to rows over the eligibility of three controversial candidates but also owing to fears that armed militias would not accept the victory of a candidate they did not back.
