The whole of Italy is cheering on its athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio wrote on Facebook after Friday's opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in Japan's capital.
"How emotional to see Italy's 'Tricolore' at the Tokyo Olympics held by Jessica Rossi and Elia Viviani, and the Olympic flag borne by Paola Egonu," Di Maio wrote on Facebook.
Rossi is an Olympic gold medallist shooter and Viviani an Olympic gold medallist cyclist, while Egonu is a volleyball international.
"Being there today is in itself an extraordinary and fully deserved achievement. Come on Azzurri, all of Italy is supporting you," Di Maio's post added.
