Libya, the Middle East, Iran, Afghanistan and the fight against terrorism were the focus of talks in Rome on Monday between Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and Jordan's foreign minister and deputy premier Ayman Safadi, the foreign ministry stated.
Di Maio underlined Italy's support for Libya's transition to stable democracy through the holding of crucial elections slated for 24 December and the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from the war-torn country, according to the statement.
Di Maio also urged fresh diplomatic efforts to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians and agreed with Safadi on the need for a two-state solution that preserves the status quo of Jerusalem's holy sites, said the statement.
Di Maio and Safadi also discussed the other main regional issues, including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and the fight against terrorism, the statement went on.
"There was significant common ground, confirming the strong friendship that frames the extensive bilateral relations (between Italy and Jordan), the statement ended.
