Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio on Wednesday began a two-day visit to Kuwait and Iraq that is aimed at strengthening relations with the two Middle Eastern countries.
On the Kuwait leg of his trip, Di Maio was due to visit al-Salem military base on Wednesday, according to a foreign ministry statement.
In Iraq, Di Maio was set to meet its president Barham Salih and premier Mustafa al-Kathimi on Thursday and to greet Italian soldiers at Camp Singara in Erbil and troops stationed in Baghdad with the Nato/Cjft contingent, the statement said.
"Leaving for Kuwait and Iraq, where today and tomorrow I will meet members of our military who serve in these two countries and convey to them the Italian government's greetings," Di Maio wrote on Facebook.
"Meetings with local authorities are on the agenda that are aimed at strengthening Italy's bilateral ties."
