No human being may deliberately slaughter defenceless people on behalf of an all-powerful God, Pope Francis stated on Monday.
"We cannot kill in the name of God," Francis told diplomats at an audience at the Vatican.
"Only an ideological and deviant form of religion can contemplate meting out justice in the name of an omnipotent God, deliberately killing innocent people," he said.
"This is what has happened in recent months in Africa, Europe and the Middle East," Francis said.
