Egypt's security forces are hunting for several gunmen who opened fire on a church near Cairo from a motorbike on Thursday, setting off a gun battle with police, a source told Adnkronos International (AKI).
"A police officer was left with scrapes and bruises but was not hit by a bullet," the source told AKI.
"Security forces are stepping up their efforts to capture the suspects," the source said.
Three gunmen aboard a motorbike were witnessed opening fire on the church in Giza, state news agency MENA cited sources from Egypt's interior ministry as saying.
The attackers then started shooting at police guarding the church, who returned fire, MENA reported.
Attacks on Egypt's Coptic Christian minority have increased over the past decade as tensions have grown with the country's Muslim minority, and Copts have long complained over being treated as second-class citizens.
The last reported attack on Coptic Christian church in Egypt was in April, when gunmen opened fire on a church in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, wounding a policeman and four civilians.
Small bombs detonated in churches were also reported in several governorates in April, although no one was seriously injured.
