Egyptian court to re-try Mubarak over protester deaths

An Egyptian appeals court on Thursday ordered former president Hosni Mubarak to stand trial again over the killing of protesters in 2011 during the uprising against his decades-long rule.

Egypt’s Cassation Court overturned an earlier court’s decision to drop charges against 87-year-old Mubarak for complicity in the deaths of the protesters, saying it would try him on 5 November.

The trial will be the third and final Mubarak has faced over the protester deaths, as Cassation Court rulings are final and cannot be appealed, according to Al-Ahram Online.

Mubarak was cleared in a retrial last November over the deaths of 800 people during the revolution after originally being jailed for life over the killings.

The Cassation Court upheld the acquittals of several other defendants in the case, however, including ex-interior minister Habib El-Adly and six security aides.

Mubarak was separately convicted of corruption and sentenced to three years in jail earlier this year.

He stepped down in February 2011 after nearly 30 years in power after mass protests against his rule, and has faced a series of trials and and retrials for the protester deaths and for corruption.

The time he has spent in custody means he has already served his three-year jail term for embezzlement.

He is currently in the Maadi military hospital in Cairo.
