Gunmen shot dead in the northern Egypt a journalist who was standing for election in upcoming parliamentary polls, daily Al-Ahram Online reported on Wednesday.
Nashaat El-Alwany's family accuses an antiquities smuggling gang of murdering El-Alwany overnight in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate after he published an investigative report on the theft of ancient treasures in the Nile Delta governorate.
El-Alwany worked as a reporter for the popular Al-Ashera Masaa TV show and independent weekly Sout Al-Ummah.
Police have opened an investigation into El-Awany's killing, his family said.
Kafr El-Sheikh, in the Nile Delta, is one of the governorates included in the second phase of Egypt's elections, which will start on 21-22 November.
Voting in the first phase of the elections to the 596-seat parliament begins in Egypt on 18 October in a process that will last six weeks.
