The energy crisis stoked by Russia's seven-week-old invasion of Ukraine underlines the need for Europeanism, Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Friday.
"Italy, like other European states, is waging crucial battles in Europe such as that for a gas price cap. To do this we need more Europeanism," Di Maio told public broadcaster RAI's 'Today is another day' programme.
"We need a more efficient Europe. We don't need sovereignism," Di Maio went on.
"If we turn inwards upon ourselves as a country and (European Union) member states, we won't have the Europe that gave us the (post-pandemic) Recovery Fund which has made available billions of euros," he said.
