Eni and its partners in Nigeria have taken the final investment decision and signed a deal to boost its liquified natural gas production at its Train 7 processing unit in the capital, Abuja, according to an Eni statement.

The brownfield development, which is expected to start-up in 2024, will increase annual LNG output by over 30% to more than 30 million tonnes per year from the current 22.5 Mtpa, the statement said.

Nigeria is rich in oil and gas but has been struggling to boost its output of both resources and its LNG production has declined.

The scaling up of output at Train 7 will make the Abuja plant "one the world’s most important LNG gas hubs, and it will allow partners to further leverage Nigeria’s abundant associated gas resources," said the statement.

Eni is a founding partner of Nigeria LNG and holds a 10.4% share. Other partners, state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC (49%), Shell (25.6%), and Total (15%).

The project will also add more than 1 Mtpa of capacity to Eni’s global LNG portfolio. the statement noted.

Eni has been Nigeria since 1962, with operated and non-operated exploration, development and production activities in the onshore and offshore areas of the Niger Delta.

In 2018, Eni's equity hydrocarbon production amounted to 100,000 boe/day.
