As the biggest humanitarian aid donor to Afghanistan, the European Union needs to make its presence felt in the war-torn country and the surrounding region, according to Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio.
''The European Union has to be present in Afghanistan and in the region," Di Maio stated on Friday, ahead of a trip to neighbouring Uzbekistan, Tagikistan and Pakistan that was due to include a stop in Qatar.
"This to safeguard the Afghan people but also bordering countries that are gearing up to handle an extremely complex crisis," Di Maio added.
