The European Union must solve the ongoing issue of migration and at the same strive to help end the deadly conflict in Libya, Germany's president Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Thursday.
"A European solution to the migration crisis must go hand in hand with efforts aimed at bringing peace to Libya," Steinmeier during an official visit to Rome.
Speaking after talks at the Quirinale Palace with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella, Steinmeier referenced an upcoming conference on Libya that Germany will host next month with US support.
"The initiative for an international conference in Berlin in October is being organised with the aim of finding a diplomatic solution for Libya," said Steinmeier.
A former foreign minister, Steinmeier has served as Germany's head of state since March 2017. He belongs to the Social Democratic Party, which has governed with the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union since December 2013.
