EU must strive for Libya's stability - Italy

The European Union must "make a specific commitment" to stabilising war-ravaged Libya, preferably under the aegis of the United Nations, Italy's premier Mario Draghi stated on Wednesday.

"We need a specific commitment from the European Union to Libya's stability, hopefully under the auspices of the UN," Draghi told members of Italy's lower house of parliament.

Draghi was addressing lawmakers on the eve of a European leaders' summit in Brussels in Thursday and Friday and ahead of an international conference on Libya in Berlin on Wednesday.

Foreign minister Luigi Di Maio is attending the second Berlin conference on Libya - Italy's former colony - the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The conference aims to "relaunch the process of pacification and reconciliation of Libya following initial progress achieved on the ground", according to the statement.

Progress in stabilising Libya includes last October's ceasefire agreement between its warring sides and the appointment of a transitional unified executive authority in March tasked with leading the country to elections scheduled for 24 December, the statement said.

At the first Berlin conference held in January last year, world powers vowed to uphold a much-violated UN arms embargo on Libya and to cease external meddling in the country.
