The European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and EU states are to forge joint proposals on keeping the peace in Libya, Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Monday.

Borrell "has committed to developing a proposal together with all member states. We will do this while remaining cautious over a monitoring or peacekeeping mission," Di Maio told reporters on the sidelines of an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.

"We need to follow up closely what was agreed in Berlin," Di Maio said, referring to a meeting on Sunday at which western powers agreed to stop supplying arms to Libya during a truce agreed earlier this month between its warring factions.

"We must continue in the direction of fostering dialogue between the two sides," Di Maio said, referring to the forces of eastern warlord Khalifa Haftar and United Nations backed premier Fayez al-Sarraj and allied militias.

Italy has extensive interests in oil-rich Libya, its former colony and is keen to wield influence in stabilising the war-wracked country.
