European Union tourism in the wake of the Covid-19 coronoavirus pandemic was the focus of phone talks between Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and his Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg, the foreign ministry tweeted on Monday.

"At the centre of the talks was tourism in the EU: Italy and Austria will continue to work together to bring back freedom of movement in Europe as soon as possible," read the tweet.

Italy’s borders are due to reopen to European visitors on 3 June. Tourist destinations are already in the reopening phase, starting with local customers, and hotels, restaurants and museums are set to follow suite.
