Foreign, defence ministries sign new electronic ID card accord

Italy's foreign and defence ministries have inked an agreement to issue more ATe electronic ID cards for civil servants to enter buildings, access digital services and sign documents electronically, the foreign ministry said Thursday in a statement.

"The agreement with the defence ministry is part of the foreign ministry's digital innovation process that is underway to make it ever-better able to take on the challenges posed by the new technologies," the statement cited secretary-general Ettore Sequi as saying.

"The foreign ministry was among the first to sign an accord with the defence ministry to provide the ATe ID cards," said Enrico Degni, Head of the Army Chief of Staff's Sixth Division, according to the statement.

The defence ministry later signed ATe agreements with Italy's interior and agriculture ministries, its Audit Court and other public bodies, said Degni, who along with Sequi attended Thursday's signing ceremony.

Over 4,500 foreign ministry staff members received ATes under a 2016 accord, the statement noted.
