The international response to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis must involve its neighbours, G20 leaders agreed on Tuesday, Italy's prime minister Mario Draghi said.
"The involvement of nearby countries is essential," Draghi told reporters after he chaired a virtual G20 summit on Afghanistan.
Russia in particular supported this position but it was accepted by all G20 leaders at Tuesday's summit, Draghi said.
"There is full awareness that the regions surrounding Afghanistan are involved in many ways...thousands, perhaps millions of migrants have ended up in nearby countries, which, without wanting to, are having to manage a totally new situation that is not over," Draghi stated.
The migrant flows from Afghanistan will continue, Draghi warned.
"For this reason it is important to respond to this situation sooner rather than later," Draghi said.
