G20 will ringfence funds for Afghan women says Di Maio

The G20 will ringfence funds to help Afghan women within its humanitarian aid programmes, will support female activists and track human rights in Afghanistan, Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Thursday.

"At Italy's behest, we will act on three fronts: to insert a funding quota for the female population; closely monitor the human rights situation and support Afghan female activists," Di Maio wrote on Facebook.

Di Maio's post came after he chaired a G20 meeting ministerial meeting on Afghanistan on Wednesday, which Spain, the Netherlands, Singapore and Qatar were invited to join.

Thirteen UN specialized agencies, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank took part in the virtual meeting, according to the foreign ministry.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, sixteen ministers, including the foreign ministers of the US, France, Germany, the UK, China, India, Spain, the IMF Managing Director and the World Bank president took part in Wednesday's meeting, the foreign ministry stated.

Italy currently holds the G20 presidency.
