Negotiations to end of Russia's 226-day-old war on Ukraine are only possible if the European Union and Nato show "unity and resolve", according to EU economy commissioner and former Italian premier Paolo Gentiloni.
"We are all concerned there will be an escalation of the war in Ukraine and I think the best way to prevent this is for European countries and those of the Atlantic Alliance to maintain unity and resolve," Gentiloni told Italian public radio on Friday.
"The kind of unity and resolve that Ukrainian forces are showing will create the conditions for negotiations," Gentiloni added.
Gentiloni's comments came as US President Joe Biden warned the risk of an "Armageddon" was at its highest level since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis after nuclear threats made against the West by Russian leader Vladimir Putin in a televised speech on 21 September.
