United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) chief Fillippo Grandi has praised Liberia for a new law ending a 1973 ban on dual nationality and which also allows people to claim Liberian citizenship through their mothers as well as their fathers.
"Congratulations to Liberia, to President @GeorgeWeahOff and his government for granting women and men equal rights to confer nationality to their children," Grandi tweeted on Friday.
"Amending gender discriminating nationality laws is a key step towards preventing statelessness. Liberia is showing the way!"
