UN refugee agency chief Filippo Grandi hopes Lebanon will have "a safer, more peaceful future" after at least six Shiites were reported to have been shot dead in Beirut in the worst civil violence since 2008.
"In Beirut on a difficult day in which lives were lost - again," Grandi tweeted on Thursday.
He referred an attack on protesters heading to a demonstration called by Hezbollah to demand the removal of the judge probing the catastrophic explosion that ripped through the city's port last year.
"I held discussions with the President, Prime Minister, Speaker and ministers on the way forward on refugee issues, and much needed support to Lebanon," Grandi's tweet added.
"I wish the Lebanese people a safer, more peaceful future."
Hezbollah and the Shiite Amal Movement, accused the rightwing Christian party The Lebanese Forces of carrying out the attack in the Tayouneh district near the birthplace of Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war.
