The killing of over six million Jews by the Nazis and their collaborators during World War II was "the most tragic chapter in the history of Europe," the foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

"On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the foreign ministry joins the international community in remembrance of the victims of the Shoah, the most tragic chapter in the history of Europe," read the statement.

"Italy reiterates its steadfast commitment to fighting all forms of discrimination and intolerance, first and foremost among which anti-Semitism," the statement went on.

Italy is "concerned" by "an increasingly marked and unacceptable resurgence of anti-Semitism," the statement underlined.

The statement cited "instances of violence against members of the Jewish community, as well as widespread attempts – fed by stereotypes, old and new, amplified by the digital cyberspace – to downplay, deny and distort the Shoah."

Italy "is determined not to let its guard down and to intensify efforts to continue fostering remembrance of the Holocaust," the statement said.

Educational and information campaigns, especially targeting younger people, are part of intensified efforts to keep fostering remembrance of the Holocaust by Italy - which chairs the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers - the statement noted.

The statement highlighted Italy's steadfast support for the UN Resolution on Holocaust denial and distortion, promoted by Israel and Germany and approved on 20 January.

The UN Resolution's approval came 80 years to the day since the Wansee Conference on 20 January 1942 at which senior Nazi officials planned the so-called 'Final Solution to the Jewish Question” and which led to the creation of a network of extermination camps.
