'Houthi rebels shoot down Saudi fighter jet'

Shia al-Houthi rebels shot down a Saudi fighter jet Monday in northern Yemen, a local media report said. The rebels shot down the jet in the Noshour Valley in Saada province, Yemen’s al-Massirah television reported.

The same day, Saudi Arabia resumed its air strikes on the Yemeni capital of Sanaa as the civilian death toll topped 3,600, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported.

The raids targeted Sanaa's Faj Attan district, which houses a military base, Fars said.

Earlier on Monday, the Moroccan army announced that one of its F-16 fighter jets had gone missing Sunday on its way to carry out an airstrike against Yemen, the state MAP news agency reported.

On Friday, Saudi Arabia announced a five-day ceasefire in its air campaign against the Houthi rebels.

The campaign began on 26 March without a United Nations mandate in a bid to restore power to Yemen's fugitive President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

Morocco is among nine countries taking part in the Saudi-led campaign against the Houthis, which has worsened the humanitarian crisis in the impoverised Arab nation.
