Egyptian officials stopped a prominent human rights lawyer from boarding a flight to Jordan from Cairo International Airport on Thursday, state-run daily Al-Ahram said, citing airport security sources.
Negad El-Borai was stopped under a judicial order, according to airport officials.
“I will not appeal the [judge’s] decision or any other decision taken by the government, though if I am referred to court under clear charges I will defend myself,” El-Borai said on Twitter account Thursday.
The lawyer said he had no plans to emigrate from Egypt, where he is still committed to defending human rights until his "last breath".
El-Borai was put under investigation in April over allegations that he formed his United Group law firm without a permit, Al-Ahram said.
He had been due to fly to Jordan's capital Amman to visit family, as his wife is Jordanian, the paper said.
Egypt has banned several rights activists from travelling and a court has frozen the assets of seven non-government organisations over 'illicit' foreign funding, a move criticised by the United Nations.
