Indian Muslim group to visit Shroud of Turin

A delegation from the UK-based Indian Muslim Ahmadiyya Association was on Monday due to visit the world famous Shroud of Turin, which many Christians believe is the burial cloth of Jesus Christ.

Ahmadiyya delegates will be given a tour of the 14-foot linen cloth by Monsignor Giuseppe Ghiberti, honorary president of the Diocese of Turin's Shroud Commission.

The restored 14-foot linen cloth has gone on display for the first time in five years and up to one million people are expected to view it in the coming weeks.

Sceptics say the linen said to bear the figure of a crucified man is a medieval forgery.

Pope Francis will on 21 June make a pilgrimage to Turin to venerate the shroud.

The cloth is on show until 24 June and viewings are free but booking is mandatory, according to the sindone.org website.

The Ahmadiyya movement was founded by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam in 1889 in the Punjabi village of Qadian. It is now headquartered in the borough of Merton in South London, where Europe's largest mosque is located.
