The Islamic State extremist group Tuesday claimed responsibility for an attack in central Tunisia that killed three policemen and injured 12, according to Arabic media reports.

In a statement posted on Twitter, IS said the attack in the Sidi Bouzid region was carried out by "two soldiers of the caliphate who attacked two military sites with small arms," according to the reports.

Three police officers and one suspected jihadist died in Monday's attack on a checkpoint in Sidi Ali Ben Aoun in central Tunisia, the national TAP news agency reported, citing the foreign ministry.

A second suspected jihadist was captured by security forces after sustaining serious injuries in the ambush, TAP said, quoting a foreign ministry statement.

Two people who sustained gunshot wounds in Monday's attack were stable in hospital late on Monday, TAP reported.

Sidi Ali Ben Aoun is in Sidi Bouzid governorate.

In a separate attack late on Monday, a member of Tunisia's security forces was killed and four others were injured in armed clashes with a terrorist group in El Mella, in the northern governorate of Jendouba, TAP said, citing the interior ministry.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for that attack.
